Solex weaved in and out of the trees, moving as fast as his limber legs could carry him. Pine needles flew up with every meeting between his paws and the ground. Faster, he told himself, run faster. He tapped into his last gear, his heart complaining about the extra work. He leaped and bounded, clearing stumps and logs. His sharp eyes managed to catch sight of a gopher hole, which he twisted to avoid. Nearing his destination, the wolf sped up instead of slowing down. He finally skidded to a stop. The Ronde, he said in his head, I made it to the Ronde.
"Solex! What're you . . . What is it?" It was one of the yearlings, curiously prodding.
"Alpha!" Solex said. "Where's Silas? Where's my father?!" Solex bristled on the words, his hackles, tail and lips rising all at once. The yearling tucked tail and rolled over, his paws drawn up over his chest.
"Patrol! He's on patrol! The east border!" The yearling's words fell out, but Solex paid little attention. He streaked off towards the east border focusing on his father's scent. Several members called out to him, but he ignored them too. He found the trail and finally the border. He followed the urine markings all the way to the Alpha. There was his father, looking as big and white and kingly as ever. He turned quietly and arched his brows confusedly.
"Solex? What-" Silas started but Solex quickly stopped him.
"Father, I've heard rumors, from many sorces, I'm sure they must be true, it's awful, everyone says we're doomed, we can't, what about the little ones? It's terrible, Father, terrible-"
"SOLEX." Silas stopped his son with a loud word. He strided toward's the grey flecked male, staring deep into bright yellow eyes, identical to his own. "What is it?" He demanded.
"Xeno," Solex whispered. "They say . . . he's coming here. To see."
"See?" Silas frowned. "See what?"
Solex winced. "The new Alpha of Runedar."
