Fergus was standing outside of the gym doors, scanning the parking lot. He ruffled his blond hair and put his hands in his pockets, only to take them out again in order to dust his pants. His black suit showed any and all dust particals. He straightened his black tie. Some guys from school came through the doors and stopped. It was Jake Harolds and Austin Nestor. "Fergus, Dude," said Jake. "You look like one of the Beatles." They laughed, and Fergus did too. "Nah, he looks like one of the Blues Brother's, just without the hat and glasses," Austin said, laughing. "I don't mind looking like one of the Beatles," Fergus said. "Everyone loves them.""Where's your date, man?" Austin asked. Fergus shrugged. "I don't have one.""And you came anyway?""Yeah, why not?" "Because," Austin sneered. "You look freaking pathetic. Like no girl wanted you."Fergus put his hands up and raised his shoulders. Jake and Austin shook their heads. "Well, where are your dates?""Inside. We're bringing the car around so they won't have to walk. They want to go to an after party."Fergus nodded in understanding. "Later, man." Jake said. "See ya, guys." Fergus smiled after them. As the other boys left, He continued looking out at the parking lot. To his surprise, he saw what he'd been looking for. His friend Russell's old white Ford was pulling into the lot. Finally, Fergus thought. He thought of Russell as his wing-man. Fergus did not need help when it came to socializing, In fact, Russell needed him. But things always went better when they both had someone to bounce things off of, and Russell's strength was his good looks. It would not be quite the same tonight, though, as Russell had informed him that he would be bringing a date. Fergus peered out at the truck, but he could'nt see anyone. He put his hands in his pockets again. He would wait by the door.

Viola's hazel eyes widened and shined reflections from the school's front lights. There were balloons hanging from doors and banners and posters put up across the building's walls.
This wasn't the first time Violette had been to Cysrin High. In fact in her earlier years she made frequent visits and discreetly tried to look into the Music Room's window, often trying and failing to understand what was written on the board, and what secret messages the teacher seemed to send his class every time he picked up a stick and waved it around. But she had seen the school in its everyday glory, and to see it now, covered in decorations and lights was already exciting at the least.
Her hands stayed fumbling infront of her, overwhelmed with excitement and itching to just grab Russell and drag him to the dance. But another part of Viola, the frightened and unsure part, kept gnawing at her stomach and preventing her from doing anything but staring and awaiting Russell to take the lead of the night.
Hazel-brown eyes scanned from the roof of the school down to the parking lot where beautiful girls were being helped out of cars by handsomely dressed men. Viola bit her lip nervously and with a sense of jealousy, her focus being on the girls with their gorgeous, fluffy, knee-length dresses. When she saw their dates, however, she regained confidence in knowing that she had the best one. Looking up, she was greeted with Russell’s warm, reassuring glance and confirmed her knowledge.
“Alright, students, please enter from the front doors to the Gymnasium where the dance will take place. Food will be provided for you at a table at the back of the gym.” The voice belonged to a finely dressed woman near the entrance of the school, ushering the students in the parking lot to their destination. Viola suddenly felt very awkward and out of place. Was she even allowed to attend even though she wasn’t a student? She wanted to find another entrance, where the woman wouldn’t see her incase she really wasn’t allowed. But then a reassuring thought came to her troubled mind’s aid: Russell wouldn’t have asked her to come if she wasn’t allowed.
Inhaling deeply, she bravely stepped closer to her date and discreetly intertwined a couple of her fingers with his. “I can do this,” she thought, taking another breath.
“I can do this.”

Russell parked quickly and got out of the truck. He manually locked his door and put his keys in his pocket. He opened Viola's door and held his palm out for her to take. As she did, he folded his fingers around her hers. They walked towards the gym, hand in hand.
"Remember, if you want to leave, just tug on my sleeve," He said, trying to put her at ease. She looked nervous, but excited, and Russell sincerely hoped she would have fun. As they came closer to the doors, Mrs. Heart, the assistant principal stood at the edge of the parking lot giving directions and pointing with her silly walkie-talkie. Russell smiled at her as they passed and she gave a quick one back. The gym looked very festive with it's banners and balloons. He hoped the inside decor would be as pretty, for Viola's enjoyment.
As they came to the big double doors, a figure stepped out from the wall he'd been leaning on. It was another senior, dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and black tie. His wavy blonde hair didn't look combed, but that might have been intentional.
"Fergus!" Russell said. "Hey," He smiled at his friend, who smiled back and twiddled his fingers in a wave.
"Hey, Russ."
Russell brought Viola to stand slightly in front of him.
"Fergus, this is Viola," He said gesturing. "Viola, this is my friend, Fergus." Fergus nodded happily and smiled at Viola.
"Hey there," He said. "Russ told me about you. You play an instrument, huh? That's amazing to me. I can't play anything but the radio." Russell chuckled, and noticed Fergus was alone.
"No date, dude?"
Fergus shrugged. "Nah, It's all good though." Russell patted his friend on the shoulder. Nothing phased him. Fergus turned to go in.
"All the food's gonna be gone, man, c'mon."
Russell laughed and leaned toward Viola. "That's Fergus, always thinking of the food." He linked arms with her and walked after Fergus. He could still feel Viola's small anxiety.
"It's okay," He said. "I've got you."

Viola's finely tuned ears caught onto the faint words of other girls as they passed her. A couple complimented her discreetly while others made rude comments or jealously aknowledged her date. As they finished, they'd turn to look at other girls and repeat the procedure. Viola looked down self-conciously and focused on Russell's shoes instead.
As they neared the Gym, her hazel eyes instantly locked onto a dark figure in the shadows of the school. She could make out a head of finely kept blonde hair, and a tie hanging from the neck, but nothing too fancy. Coming closer, still holding tightly onto Russell's hand, the figure stepped out and Viola sketchily looked away.
"Fergus!" The sudden sound of Russell's voice calling out to someone made her jump slightly. Stepping cooly into view was the stranger. "Hey, Russ." Viola felt a gentle hand coaxing her infront of her date and she blushed slightly. "Fergus, this is Viola; Viola, this is my friend, Fergus." The blonde man nodded friendly and smiled, she did as well, embarrased to have been staring at him earlier. "Hey there," he said. "Russ told me about you. You play an instrument, huh? That's amazing to me. I can't play anything but the radio." She smiled more comfortably at that, ignoring the butterflies that roused themselves at the thought of being talked about positively.
It was then that Viola suddenly noticed the absence of a partner by Fergus. It seemed Russell did too, as he questioned it a moment later. "Nah, it's all good though," Fergus replied. He made a comment about food and Russell laughed before cracking a joke and linking an arm with her. The girl welcomed the touch and followed under the lead of her date. From not too far away, music began to fill her ears and Viola nervously grasped Russell's arm tighter and focused on her shoes. "It's okay," came his silky voice, "I've got you."
With that and a couple more steps, the music in her ears geared towards a cresendo.

Russell brought Viola through the door, nodding at kids he passed. As they entered the gym, He was pleased by the job the decorating committee had done. Lively dance music was playing, and if Russell wasn't mistaken, some song from the 80's. There were banners and shiny cut out stars pasted on the walls. A large light was stung up that strobed different colors. It rotated as well, shining blue, purple, pink, orange, and green light all over everyone. He also noticed one of those light things that shone out tiny beams in a hundred directions, giving the surroundings the look a sky with tons of little stars in the night. As he and Viola walked under it, the little white beams fell on her and she was covered in the little moving stars. The sight had quite an effect on him, and his eyes were locked on Viola for several seconds. For a while, he didn't even blink.
"Russ!"
A push on his shoulder woke him from his mini trance, but he had become so focused in that short amount of time, that the shove startled him more than it should've. He whirled around with his nostrils wide, like he might leap upon someone and rip their arms off.
"Whoa! Geez, man. Ease up." One of his other school friends, Leo, had only shoved him to get his attention. He was holding his hands up and rested them on top of his thick black hair, his brows tilted in confusion.
"Oh, Leo. Sorry, I . . . Thought you were someone else." Russell lied quickly, trying to push Leo's thoughts past the look on his face.
"Well, I 'ont wanna be the guy you thought I was," Leo laughed, his chuckle coming through his white teeth.
"Leo, this is Viola," Russell held her hand and gently and subtlety bumped against her side. "Viola, this is another buddy of mine, Leo."
Leo pursed his lips and made a little nod. "How do?" He said, giving her another look. Russell saw he had on a dark purple suit and tie. Silly looking on anyone else, but accenting Leo's chocolate complexion perfectly and making him look very suave.
"Gotta go, man, Tasha's waitin'. See you in English. Maybe you can do my paper for me." Leo said as he sauntered off.
"He, uh, makes me tense sometimes," Russell said to Viola, hoping she hadn't much noticed his earlier jumpy response. He led her to the long tables where Fergus was already standing. Russell picked up two punch glasses and handed one to Viola. It was very good punch, and it reminded Russell of very tart pink lemonade mixed with Sprite. For a second the tart taste hurt his taste buds and he pinched his face from the shock.
"Tart isn't it?" He asked Viola, and sat his glass down, laughing as Fergus' face pinched the same way. "I guess you have to keep sipping to get used to it."

Viola stared blindly at a couple dancing infront of them, purposefully avoiding Russell's intense gaze so to keep her blush from being noticed. From her perepheral vision, she saw another figure coming up behind her date and turned in synch with Russell. She noticed his shoulders tense suddenly as he did so and jumped in surprise as he emitted a growl to the stranger.
"Whoah! Geez, man. Ease up."
"Oh, Leo. Sorry, I . . . Thought you were someone else."
Viola stepped over to Russell's side to get a view of who he was talking to. Infront of them stood a tall black man with a fashionable purple tux. He made a remark on Russell's startled behavior and laughed, revealing perfect white teeth. Viola blushed and hid a part of herself behind her date, biting her lip and trying to stop the reddening.
"Leo, this is Viola."
She felt Russell take her hand and coax her into better view. "How do?" Leo said with another handsome smile. She raised her hand a bit and waved with a smile in response. Leo excused himself quickly to return to his own date.
Viola followed after Russell to the tables, eagerly eying the food but feeling too uncomfortable and foreign to take anything. She saw Fergus there too, also staring down the food. She remembered what Russell said about his friend's appetite and stifled a laugh.
Russell handing her a cup of punch and she took it with a smile. Viola's facial expression suddenly twisted in response to the sour taste of the drink. She grinned though and took another sip after adjusting to its taste.
Her hazel eyes drifted into the dancefloor where she could see dozens of colors moving about. Though the air inside the gym was stuffy, there was enough room for students to dance. Again, she looked back to Fergus, noticing how seemingly bored he looked. Viola raised an eyebrow, getting an idea.
Viola placed both her own slender hands atop Russell's, pulling him onto the dancefloor and releasing him to wave for Fergus to follow. She was thankful for the upbeat song that began and raised Russell's hand above her head to playfully twirl into his chest before darting away again. A smile played on her lips as she began to warm up to the surroundings.

Russell swallowed his punch and sat his glass down. He looked over at Fergus, who looked bored. There were many students around, but no one seemed to have the desire to dance. Russell bit his lip to keep from laughing as Fergus popped several cookies in his mouth all at once. Suddenly, he could see Viola was moving in the corner of his eye. She took his hands, and began to tug him towards the dance floor. She wanted to dance. Russell grinned. She waved at Fergus to join. Fergus took another swig of punch to wash down his cookies, and shuffled around the table to catch up. Russell laughed and moved along with Viola, twirling her in and out. The music was upbeat and Fergus easily jumped in, trying out a bit of his robot and something else that Russell couldnt possibly name. Other dance goers soon gained confedence by watching how much fun the three of them were having. Leo and his date, Tasha jumped right in, followed by half the crowd. Girls raised their arms and guys shook their shoulders. No one looked like particularly great dancers, but it didnt matter. It was fun. Russell attempted to show Fergus something besides the robot. Leo came to the rescue and taught him something that Russell didnt know, and it actually made Fegus look like the better dancer of them all. Russell was happy to keep in rhythm with Viola, who was very natural at it, most likely because of her tons and tons of practice with her instrument. When they danced, it was easy for Russell to loose track of the people around him. They seemed to blur and diffuse. Viola, on the other hand, was very clear to see. ooc (sorry its shortish, I listened to my dirty dancing sountrack the whole time i wrote it , so i'd feel dancy, LOL...it took me a little while to get back the feel for Russell, but they'll get better

Viola laughed wholeheartedly at Leo and Fergus who seemed eager to dance as well. They were mingling in and out of modern dances while sometimes Fergus would pull a move right out of the century.
As her eyes caught on to those of Russell's her smile softened. Viola noted his chiseled jaw, his hint of stubble, the messy mahogany hair that bounced when he moved. His beautiful, deep eyes, filled to the brim with light and personality.
Before she'd met him, she'd been so lonely, so sad and tired. She had no other interest but music which made her heart pump. But being with Russell, even for their limited time had brought out the more social part of herself that Viola sometimes didn't recognize. In the number of times he and Violette had visited eachother, she smiled more than she ever had in her life. He was a wonderful friend...
Viola suddenly blushed and looked away, turning her focus to the DJ who seemed to be taunting the students; laughing when they asked for slow music and ignoring them when they asked for more up-beat tunes.
Finally, the noise seemed to quiet down and Viola stepped to the sidelines of the gym, picking up the hem of her dress just slightly as she stepped over fallen confetti and balloons. She picked a balloon up and poked it away, laughing as it hit Russell's forehead.
Her feet began to feel sore and she slightly tossed her head to the side, gesturing towards the gym door. It was getting late and a few other couples and singles had already left.

Fergus shuffled off the dance floor, tired from all the exercise, trying to get back to his punch. He moved around the students and made it to the table to find his cup. It was getting kind of late, and alot of people were starting to leave. He looked around for Russ and Viola, but didn't see them in the crowd. He wondered about his friend's new interest. Russell had told him she lived at the orphanage. Fergus had not failed to notice the scar on her face. It was well hidden by her hair, but it was not completely so. Fergus couldn't help but speculate what had caused such a disfigurement. A fire? Abuse? An accident? It could be any number of things. He liked the girl. He liked her fine. But there was a part of him that worried for his friend. Was there a reason she didn't speak? Was she feinting it for sympathy or something? She could be a delinquent, there were all types of unfortunate cases in the orphanage. Fergus didn't allow himself to think on these things too much. He reminded himself how sweet, gentle and pleasant she was. No way a girl like that had bad intentions. Besides, Russell had always been a great judge of character. He decided against looking for them, and instead chose to leave them alone. He would want the same if he'd brought a date. He gathered a few cookies and Cheetos's into a napkin, and refilled his punch glass. He walked out to his jeep with his food. As he crossed the parking lot, he passed several girls. One of them turned as he went by and addressed him. "Hey you, Russell's friend," She said. Fergus turned slowly to face them. He smiled casually. " Me?""Yeah you," The girl came forward. She was dressed in a body hugging maroon colored dress and had the same colored flowers in her hair. The two other girls behind her remained silent. Fergus thought for a minute, then recognized the girl as being Hannah, a girl from his class. "Who was that slut he dragged in?" Hannah put her hands on her hips. " He told me he wasn't coming to the dance."Fergus frowned. "It's a free country, he changed his mind. And she's NOT a slut.""Oh yeah? Looked to me like some sort of white trash. She's probably been with every guy in town. That's why Russell likes her. He wants-""You better stop talking about my best friend that way, or I might have to trip and spill this punch all over your head.""I wish you would try to come near me," She snapped. "I'd have your whole family sued."Fergus glared at her as she flipped her hair and sauntered away. "Tell Russell to look me up when he dumps that skank."Fergus was a gentle hearted peacemaker, But even he wouldn't have minded giving Hannah a kick in the ass.
