Tanner sat on a bench near the bonfire, tapping his fingers on his knee impatiently. He had passed Xaen a note during class to meet him at the bonfire in Saltren territory, despite the teacher's angry protest and insistence that he read the note aloud. That had resulted in all-around annoyance, excluding he and Xaen, considering he had written it in code. What read as gibberish to others was known to be a summons to them.
He hoped fervently she hadn't blown it off. He had always considered her a good friend and he'd do anything for her, but did she feel the same way? Maybe she thought it was something stupid and childish. He should have articulated more, but hadn't wanted anyone to figure out the code (maybe they too watched BBC's "Sherlock") and follow them, only to answer to Alpha Harkness. He shuddered at the thought. No doubt she'd be unkind in her lashings.
Whistling softly, he reached up to his neck, starting at the fact that is necklace was no longer there. Right, duh, he thought unhappily. It was stolen by some idiot rat.
"MacFennel," a voice said, commanding but gentle. "What are you doing out here at this time of day? Don't you have homework to finish?"
"S-sorry, Alpha Harkness," he bowed his head and peered up at her through his eyelashes. Wolf habits died hard in human form. That and the intimidating female was scary without the fangs and claws. "I was waiting for a friend."
"..Hm. Be careful who you side with, young one. There's a storm brewing." With that, the black-haired woman turned and walked from the clearing. Weird, Tanner thought. He went back to his impatient tapping. Xaen, will you hurry up?
A thought struck him that hadn't factored before. Maybe Xaen was no longer allowed in the territory. Perhaps she had been on her way and had been stopped by a patrol. Don't be stupid. Like she'd ever answer to Saltren authority. He chuckled softly and went back to waiting.
